Akie Haga is a Canberra-based glass artist who values the high level of skill and unique artistic expression that characterises the art and craft of her native Japan. She has been practising since 2005 after graduating from her studies in England and Canberra.
She utilises flameworking techniques to sculpt forms and manipulate colours to produce fascinating works of art that speak of nature’s expression of outer organic beauty and inner geometric harmony.
Akie considers glass as a medium where craftsmanship and artistic expression blend in infinite ways. It can be transformed from liquid to solid and can be worked while hot or cold. Glass working includes various techniques that produce many forms, appearances and textures, from small objects to large architectural pieces.
In recent years, she has been focusing on making wearable glass pieces to make art more accessible and enjoyable. She also creates small sculptures that incorporate air plants.
