Charles Darwin in The Descent of Man observed that secondary sexual characteristics are more diversified and conspicuous in birds, proclaiming: “birds appear to be the most aesthetic of all animals, excepting of course man.” Yet Darwin argued man’s sense of beauty “is manifestly a far more complex feeling and is associated with various intellectual ideas.” But what is a man—or bird—to do with such complex feelings when they come upon him in the dark of night? These thoroughly bemused and curious man birdies are keenly awaiting your generous guidance and assistance.
