This looks like a sea creature, but it’s symbolic of much more. Ningaloo Reef, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Western Australia, is experiencing severe coral bleaching due to climate change. A record-breaking marine heatwave has caused ocean temperatures to rise 1.5 degrees C above average since September 2024, leading to bleaching across iconic sites.Up to 90% of coral are affected including deep-water species previously thought to be resilient. This event coincides with widespread bleaching across 80% of the world’s reefs, marking the worst global bleaching event on record.
