This artwork was the first in this series and was inspired by finding a sacred kingfisher in Ainslie which had flown into a shop window and knocked itself out. In spite of living here for more than 60 years, I’d never seen one, but they transit the area every year migrating to Torres Strait. Only 150 years ago they could have made the journey through a pristine environment. Now they have to negotiate tall buildings and traffic and windows and doors — a million obstacles to navigate, and nearly half a million people to avoid.
