Lightening Ridge – with such an evocative name – is best known for black opal mining, but the surrounding areas support agriculture like sheep, goats and cattle, as well as grains. But the area faces rising heat, variable water supply, heightened fire risk, and threats to its agriculture, access to water, and local ecosystems – all hallmarks of climate change in rural inland NSW.
