The famous pink lakes of Western Australia, feeding grounds of nomadic birds and snails, are given their startling rosy hue by tiny extremophiles. They’ve appeared in Dreamtime stories and are a popular Instagram site. But the colours are disappearing due to climate change and resource over extraction. Through targeted intervention and letting nature take its course, the lakes could bloom pink once more.
