Originally from Japan, Korea and China, Japanese Honeysuckle has become a serious environmental weed in Southern Australia. Introduced to Australia as a garden ornamental it quickly established as a vigorous climbing plant in the native bush. It is a robust scrambler with 10-meter-long stems that smother native vegetation. It spreads by bird dispersed seeds and by long vegetative runners that can form roots when in contact with the ground. Japanese Honeysuckle is toxic to humans. The berries are poisonous, and the leaves are a skin irritant. (framed)
