300mm wide
250mm deep
For some years now, I’ve been researching and making work about Australian Royal Commissions, the highest form of public inquiry in this country. As an ex-serving member of the Australian Army (one of the many phases of a varied working life!) it was inevitable that I would examine the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide. I was dismayed that so much of what I was reading mirrored my own, long-ago experiences – sadly, some things don’t change. It takes enormous courage to testify at a royal commission. I wanted to honour those who did, and those who couldn’t, by using words and themes taken largely from testimony, and the commission report. Together, these works provide an insight into the lives of veterans and their loved ones. Please look closely to read the embroidered words on the oversized dog tags, an item so familiar to those who serve.
Please note, this artwork is currently on exhibition at Belconnen Arts Centre and will not be available for pick-up or delivery until the exhibition has closed. Please check the Belco Arts website for exhibition dates.
