Several Popes wore red leather shoes or red velvet slippers until the practice was discontinued by Pope Francis in 2013. I was struck by the fallibility of so many Popes to deal with the issue of child sexual abuse that the term 'feet of clay' seemed to apply. The crack in one shoe was not intentional but I was happy to include it as analogous to, and emblematic of the weakness of many modern Popes in their responses to child sexual abuse.
