Blown and hot worked glass

Marcel Hoogstad Hay is an Adelaide based artist whose practice focuses on blown glass. Originally from Canberra, he studied glass at the ANU School of Art & Design before moving to Adelaide to complete the trainee program at the Jam Factory's Contemporary Craft and Design Studios.
Within his practice, Marcel draws from traditional Venetian cane techniques, exploring and creating complex patterns and optical effects in glass. A lot of his work is influenced by astronomical phenomena such as black holes and gravitational lenses. Sophisticated visualisations of these phenomena, in the form of deep space photographs and computer-generated diagrams, inform Marcel's aesthetic. The linework in Venetian cane is very similar to those that physicists and astronomers draw to illustrate gravitational and magnetic fields. Utilising bright contrasting colours and complex line work, he aims to create objects that allude to the astrophysical concepts that he has been researching.
