My recent enthusiasm toward my functional ceramics is in direct response to the devastating bushfires experienced throughout the Bega Valley Shire last January. This traumatic event created in me a need to make practical, useful ceramics as all around me so many family members and friends were left with absolutely nothing - not even a cup. Like so many others, this period in time is one I will never forget. The meditative practice of sitting at my wheel throwing has had a calming and healing effect on me. The feel of the clay in my hands has given me much-needed respite, after the summer that was so terribly trying for myself and so many others. The process of constructing and attaching the jug spout is akin to the sculptural processes I had been previously focused on developing; allowing me to maintain a creative connection to my hand-built sculptural forms. These pleasantly simple, tactile functional ceramics have been extremely cathartic for me to create and my intention for them is to be equally cathartic for those that hold them and make use of them as they go about their daily routine and move into what we can only hope is a new more fortunate future.
